1. Write down the household routine
Count the drinks made during the busiest normal period. Record how many are straight espresso, how many use milk, who operates the equipment and how quickly the drinks need to be served.
2. Choose the amount of control
| Path | User controls | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Manual lever | Pressure and much of the extraction | Hands-on hobby |
| Semi-automatic | Grind, puck and shot | Learning and control |
| Automatic/volumetric | Grind and puck; machine stops shot | Repeatable service |
| Superautomatic | Drink selection and care | Shared convenience |
| Capsule | Capsule and volume | Fast, compact routine |
3. Budget the whole station
Include the grinder, scale, tamper, pitcher, water treatment, cleaning supplies, coffee, milk and possible electrical or plumbing work. A cheaper machine paired with a suitable grinder may be more useful than spending the full budget on the machine alone.
4. Measure the counter as a workspace
Allow for portafilter movement, hopper and reservoir access, cup height, steam-wand clearance, ventilation, cords and cleanup. Product dimensions describe the appliance, not the working station.
5. Plan water and care before the first drink
Read the manual’s water limits and cleaning procedures. Confirm filter and cleaning-product availability. Espresso ownership is easier when maintenance supplies arrive with the machine.
6. Compare methods honestly
A French press, moka pot, drip brewer or pod system may better fit a low-cost or low-maintenance routine. The goal is not to own the most complex machine; it is to make the coffee the household wants consistently.
