Water Quality for Espresso Machines

Balance taste, scale protection and machine compatibility when choosing water for home espresso.

Water affects both flavour and equipment

Espresso is mostly water. Dissolved minerals influence flavour extraction, while excessive hardness can create scale in heated passages. Water that is too low in minerals can taste flat and may not suit some machine sensors or materials.

Begin with the machine manual

Manufacturers may specify water hardness, filter cartridges or testing procedures. Those instructions take priority because boiler materials and sensors differ.

  • Test local water rather than guessing.
  • Record filter installation and replacement dates.
  • Do not use distilled or reverse-osmosis water unless the manufacturer approves it or it is properly remineralized.
  • Use fresh potable water and clean the reservoir regularly.

A taste problem and a scale problem are not always the same. Measure water and follow the machine maker’s limits.
