Start with the work you want to do
Manual and semi-automatic systems ask the user to grind, dose, prepare the coffee bed and manage the shot. Superautomatic and capsule systems move more of that work inside the machine. The right category is the one that fits the household routine, not the one with the longest feature list.
- How many drinks are made back-to-back?
- Does the user enjoy adjusting grind and recipe?
- Will several people operate the machine?
- How much daily cleaning is acceptable?
The main categories
Manual lever machines create pressure through a lever. Semi-automatic machines use a pump while the user prepares the puck and usually stops the shot. Volumetric machines can stop a programmed volume. Superautomatic machines grind and brew internally. Capsule machines emphasize speed and low mess.
| Type | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual lever | Hands-on learners | More technique |
| Semi-automatic | Control and repeatability | Requires grinder and practice |
| Automatic/volumetric | Faster repeated shots | Programming cannot correct poor grind |
| Superautomatic | Shared convenience | Less control, more internal cleaning |
| Capsule | Occasional, compact use | Higher portion cost, limited adjustment |
Do not buy by pressure number alone
Retail listings often emphasize 15-bar or 19-bar pumps. That number is not a direct cup-quality score. Compare temperature behaviour, grinder compatibility, serviceability and workflow instead.
