What one-touch convenience includes

A superautomatic typically grinds, doses, compresses and brews internally. Some models also dispense milk drinks. The convenience is real, but the internal brew group, grinder, milk path and rinse system still need regular care.

Questions that reveal ownership effort

  • Can the brew group be removed for cleaning?
  • How often must the milk system be rinsed and disassembled?
  • Can strength, water volume and temperature be adjusted separately?
  • Are tablets, filters and milk parts readily available?
  • What happens when the internal grinder or brew group wears?

Convenience versus experimentation

Superautomatic machines generally offer a narrower range of grind, dose and basket geometry than a separate grinder and portafilter. They can make enjoyable, repeatable drinks, especially milk drinks, but are not designed for the same level of manual experimentation.
