A semi-automatic machine supplies heat and pump pressure while leaving grind, dose, distribution, tamping and shot stop in the user’s hands. This balance offers meaningful control without requiring the physical pressure management of many lever machines.

Match the heating system to the drinks

One straight espresso places different demands on a machine than four lattes. For milk-heavy use, steam power and recovery matter. For straight espresso, temperature behaviour, basket options and grinder feedback may matter more.

  • Single boiler: compact, but switches between brew and steam temperatures
  • Thermoblock or thermocoil: fast warm-up, with performance depending on design
  • Heat exchanger: can brew and steam together, with a learning curve
