Why the grinder matters

Espresso uses a compact bed of finely ground coffee. Small grind changes can noticeably alter how quickly water passes through it. A grinder that makes repeatable, small adjustments is therefore part of the brewing system, not a minor accessory.

What to compare

Avoid treating burr shape or motor wattage as a single quality score. Look at the whole workflow and whether the grinder suits your machine and habits.

  • Adjustment range and step size
  • Dose repeatability
  • Retention and exchange when changing coffees
  • Noise and counter height
  • Ease of cleaning
  • Availability of replacement parts

Timed, weight-based and single-dose workflows

Timed grinders dispense for a programmed duration. Weight-based grinders aim for a target mass. Single-dose workflows weigh beans before grinding and usually keep little coffee in the hopper.

WorkflowStrengthTrade-off
Timed hopperFast repeated drinksDose can shift as beans age
Weight-basedConvenient target dosingHigher cost and more components
Single doseEasy coffee changesMore weighing and handling
The best grinder is the one that can return to a useful setting and deliver a manageable daily workflow.
