They solve different problems
Capsule machines are designed for fast, consistent portions with little cleanup. Traditional espresso systems are built around fresh grinding, adjustable dose and extraction control. A capsule drink may be espresso-style, but the system does not offer the same recipe range.
Compare the whole cost
A low machine price can hide a high portion cost. Traditional espresso requires a grinder and accessories, while beans may cost less per drink. Use actual capsule, bean, milk and maintenance prices.
| Factor | Capsule | Ground-coffee espresso |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Very low | Moderate |
| Adjustment | Limited | Broad |
| Cleanup | Low | Puck, group and milk cleanup |
| Portion cost | Often higher | Depends on beans and dose |
| Waste | Capsule-specific | Grounds plus packaging |
A household compromise
Some households keep a capsule machine for rushed mornings and a semi-automatic for deliberate drinks. Two machines only make sense when both are genuinely used.
