Espresso is a brewing method
A bag does not need to say “espresso” to work in an espresso machine. Roasters may use that label for coffees they expect to be forgiving or balanced in concentrated brewing, but many coffees can be used.
Start with flavour and difficulty
Medium and medium-dark coffees are often easier starting points because they can be soluble and forgiving. Lighter coffees may reward careful temperature, grind and yield adjustments. Very dark coffees can extract quickly and may emphasize roast flavours.
- For milk drinks, consider coffees that remain noticeable through milk.
- For straight espresso, choose tasting notes you already enjoy.
- Buy a manageable quantity while learning.
Ask useful questions
| Question | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| When was it roasted? | Freshness affects gas and extraction behaviour |
| What recipe does the roaster suggest? | Provides a starting dose and yield |
| Is it intended for milk drinks? | Can indicate flavour intensity |
| What water did the roaster use? | Water can change perceived flavour |
No roast level is automatically the correct one. Use labels as a starting point, then adjust by taste.
