Decaf needs its own dial-in

Decaffeination and roasting can change bean structure. A grind setting that works for a regular coffee may not suit a decaf from the same roaster. Treat it as a new coffee.

Plan how you will switch

Households that alternate frequently may prefer a single-dose grinder, a second grinder or a superautomatic machine with a bypass chute for pre-ground coffee.

Pre-ground bypassFast occasional decafLess freshness and limited adjustment

Taste and record

Start with the roaster’s suggested recipe when available, then adjust one variable at a time. Decaf can produce excellent espresso; it simply should not be expected to copy another coffee’s recipe.

Keep regular and decaf beans clearly labelled, especially in shared households.
